Gateway Model

Each GRIP Gateway Programme runs over the duration of a school term, usually one day per week.

Level 2 programmes have a minimum of 5 workplace days, while Level 3 programmes have a
minimum of 8 workplace days.

Cost: $550.00 plus GST per student

Placements may also be available during school holidays where suitable.

Learning resources and assessment are included in the programme fee.

GRIP Regional Pathway Advisors provide placement coordination, regular check-ins,
and ongoing communication between the ākonga, the employer and the school.

Uniforms, name badges and any PPE requirements vary depending on the workplace
and are confirmed prior to placement.

Suitable for ākonga undertaking Level 2 and Level 3 pathways.

How GRIP Works for Gateway Teachers

Getting Started

1 Contact your GRIP Regional Pathways Advisor.
2 Complete a Memorandum of Understanding.
3 Complete the Student Registration Form.
4 Identify and refer ākonga who would benefit from workplace learning.

Term Intakes

GRIP runs intakes each school term with Term 2 and Term 3 being the busiest. Pre booking is encouraged and often essential.

What GRIP Does

GRIP helps kaiako support ākonga to gain real work experience in local businesses. We organise placements, support both ākonga and employers and provide the learning and assessment materials needed to achieve NCEA credits through Gateway.

Regional Pathways Advisor Role

  • Meets with ākonga to understand interests and readiness.
  • Arranges suitable workplaces.
  • Prepares ākonga with expectations, uniform, behaviour and safety.
  • Checks in during placement for support.
  • Collects employer verification and returns completed results for reporting.

Kaiako Role

  • Liaise with your Advisor to organise placements and workshops.
  • Ensure the Memorandum of Understanding and Student Registration Forms are complete.
  • Identify and refer ākonga suitable for Gateway.
  • Confirm scheduling around school subjects, exams and attendance.
  • Remain informed of progress through Advisor updates.
  • Provide pastoral support in partnership with GRIP.

Placement Structure

Placements are completed over a ten week school term with a minimum of five days for Level 2 and a minimum of eight days for Level 3. School holiday placements may also be available by arrangement.

Support

Ongoing communication between GRIP, kaiako and employers ensures every ākonga feels safe, supported and connected.
